Why Do We Celebrate Valentine’s Day?
The history of Valentine’s Day has roots all the way back in ancient times. Valentine’s Day started out as a celebration called Lupercalia, a holiday to celebrate the Roman god of agriculture and harvest.
This celebration faded with time and the expansion of Christianity, but it was later revitalized by Pope Gelasius in 496 A.D. He declared February 14th as the feast for Saint Valentine.
The legend of Saint Valentine spread from stories that his prayers helped heal a blind daughter of a guard in the prison the saint was jailed in. He reportedly left a note for her signed, “Your Valentine.” This is where the modern-day holiday gained its inspiration. Saint Valentine was also known to be the patron saint of love.
Today, people around the world celebrate this holiday to display their love for others! This day of love is a sweet celebration full of candy, flowers, cards, and gifts!
