They can tell you whether or not a band leader is prepared and flexible, and if their clients had a great or not so great experience with a band. The only valid exception is that a band may be in such high demand, that they have limited availability (in this case the band probably performs at public events that they may invite you to). It is highly recommended that you see the band at a showcase or event, where you can also meet the band leaders, performers and their staff. The larger established companies often showcase multiple bands in one evening, making it even more convenient.
